Ruminations on Nostalgic Video Game Music // A Song From Kingdom Hearts

If you played Kingdom Hearts on PS2 you've heard this a ton. I can just see Sora's fat yellow feet flapping around to this right now. I used to get so fucking lost in this level the game really fucked with you putting it in early on. I just love the nostalgic, sitting-by-the-fire-at-home-vibe. Tons of game music capture that cozy, reminiscent feeling for people, and sometimes it depends on which game you played. Legend of Zelda does that for a lot of people. I think Kingdom Hearts music is right there with Zelda - and that's often the pinnacle of video game music for a lot of people.

I beat KH way back in the day but I never got what they called the "Ultimate Weapon" You had to collect a bunch of parts and synthesize them to create it, and that was just too much for my 10 year old brain to handle. I just wanted to see cool cutscenes and advance in the main story. Well now I'm an older, more thorough gamer and I played through this again somewhat recently. My objective? To get the ultimate weapon that alluded me. Playing through it again was a ton of fun, but when I got it, it wasn't ceremonious at all. You just got the normal screen that said "You received the weapon". I wasn't expecting them to do anything crazy, but looking back I wish they did.

I wonder what games will today's 10 years and young gamers get nostalgic over in due time. I've never played it, but I'm guessing Assassin's Creed...

The third Kingdom Hearts comes out soon, you bet I'll be playing that shit.
