“Honky-Tonk Neanderthal,” by Paul Thorn … (Country / Americana / Blues – Music to Your Ears, Mock’n’Roll–5)

Healthy doses of wit and humor help us in our pursuit of that elusive “enjoyment.”

Paul Thorn – “Honky-Tonk Neanderthal”

“Honky-Tonk Neanderthal” (2010)

In this witty and entertaining song, Paul Thorn gives us a grand little snippet of rural Americana, southern style.

A Smaller World is a Better Thing

In his typical first-person-narrative style, he paints a comical picture of a man, a time, and a place where life is a little bit different from ours. A bit simpler, a bit more laid-back, with a few different social rules, or in some cases, fewer rules. With maybe a bit less concern for the big world out there … but that's probably a good thing.

Paul Thorn

Paul Thorn is an American singer-songwriter who has been called a “southern gothic troubadour.”  He plays a folky, bluesy type of pop rock.

Most of his lyrics deal with the everyday themes of love, life, and the enjoyment of same. Usually, they include very healthy doses of wit and humor – which often helps in our pursuit of that the aforementioned, sometimes elusive “enjoyment.”

Thorn hopes that his music makes people more “positive,”  and encourages them to “count their blessings.”

The Police and The Spy

While he was still playing small gigs at local clubs, Thorn was “discovered”  in 1997 by the founder of IRS Records, Miles Copeland III. Copeland is the brother of Stewart Copeland, the drummer for the former UK band The Police, and the son of the CIA spy Miles Copeland, Jr. Soon after he met Copeland, Thorn opened for Sting, the lead singer of the The Police.    (Image source)

The Boxer and The Devil

Before becoming a professional musician, Thorn had been a professional boxer. He attained a respectable 10–3-1 record, and once fought a bout with world champion boxer Roberto Durán.

Thorn’s 2018 album “Don't Let the Devil Ride”  reached Number 1 on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart.

When I get paid on Friday
I’m a-headed to the honky tonk
There’s pretty little waitress working there
And she’s the one I want
Well, she may be my first cousin
But that aint none of your concern
I’m gonna make love to her on my tailgate
And then it’ll be your turn

I’m just a honky-tonk Neanderthal
I like to get drunk and have a ball
I haven’t ever read any books at all
I’m just a honky-tonk Neanderthal

Well, I bought me a shirt at a yard sale
Just like the one Garth Brooks wears
I’m gonna wash and blow-dry my mullet
And put on some clean underwear
Pretty soon, I’m gonna make it in Nashville
But for now it’ll have to wait
Cuz I’m singing karaoke in a restaurant
While everybody eats a catfish plate

[chorus]

Well, when Wal-Mart opens up Monday morning
I’ll be standing there, waiting in line
Toby Keith’s got a new CD
And the first one’s gonna be mine
Well, it sold 20 million copies
That many people can’t be wrong
I think I might be a homosexual
Because he really turns me on

[chorus]

I saw Paul Thorn singing on TV
It was the Conan O’Brien show
If his music is so damn good, how come
They won’t play it on the radio
He can’t even afford a real tour bus
He rides around in a mini-van
He can’t fill up a football stadium
Like Kenny Chesney and Sugarland

[chorus]

This is a hilarious song but it does teach one how to enjoy life, perhaps to the fullest. I enjoyed every bit of it. Another fine contribution.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

Always my pleasure sir.

Funny dude, I thinks he's more of a comedian than a musician!
Thanks for sharing.

I'd definitely say so, too! His music is good, his with and humor are great! Whenever I listen to his songs, I smile. That happens no matter how many times I listen to the songs, over and over again.

More of his excellent lyrics / songs ... coming soon.

Hi @majes.tytyty

As far as I could understand it is a mockery, this musical genre I have rarely heard.
I could not understand is honky-tonk that means that word in Spanish.

Yes, it's a bit of mockery, but it's not malevolent.

A honky tonk is a country music bar, particularly the type located in the southern part of the USA. ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honky-tonk

Honky-tonk
A honky-tonk (also called honkatonk, honkey-tonk, or tonk) is both a bar that provides country music for the entertainment of its patrons and the style of music played in such establishments. Bars of this kind are common in the South and Southwest United States. Many eminent country music artists, such as Jimmie Rodgers, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubb, Johnny Horton and Merle Haggard, began their careers as amateur musicians in honky-tonks. The modern-day, honky-tonk atmosphere has continued, with the likes of Dwight Yoakam, Turnpike Troubadours, and Mike and the Moonpies. The origin of the term honky-tonk is disputed, originally referring to bawdy variety shows in areas of the old West (Oklahoma, the Indian Territories and Texas) and to the actual theaters showing them.
