25,000 78rpm sides released on Internet Archive

in #music7 years ago

OK kids, it's time for you to hear what real music sounds like. Music that was captured via an analogue procedure that created a groove in a plate of acetate and transferred to a circular plate of beetle resin (yup even before vinyl) then shipped to a record store where your ancestors paid their hard-earned (yeah you know from working in a coal mine or a steel factory, truly hard-earned) cash to get hold of said beetle resin take it home and spin it at seventy-eight revolutions per minute on a spring-driven turntable, releasing the music again by a reverse version of the process that produced it, the indentations in the groove vibrating a needle attached to a loudspeaker of some description.

Yes, you could say it's a bit like an iPod I suppose.

The Internet Archive is perhaps best known for making copies of websites in the Wayback Machine, but other things need to be preserved and they're carefully digitising, purposefully including all the hisses, scratches and clicks that you get from listening directly to the real old 78s. Some of these babies are so fragile though that the very process of playing them could break them, so this is preserving for all time.

There's no shortage of good stuff in here and they're only about a tenth of the way through the project.

So kick off your shoes, loosen your tie and relax to a fine example of the mellow groove of Miss Billie Holiday and her Orchestra then dig deeper and see where you go from there!

And if you like keeping old stuff kicking around, be sure to make a (tax deductible) donation to the Archive.

Fantastic! Thank's for sharing, listening to it right now. Sooo good :)

I've used the internet archive as a resource for years.
You can also upload your own music or whatever you want there with an account.
It's a great free alternative to Soundcloud, reverbnation etc. Not only is it free it seems to have an unlimited amount of space for you to upload.
Great old songs by the way.
:)

I agree it's an amazing resource that I frequently forget about. The interface was complicated and a bit confusing at first, but mainly because of the richness of service they offer.

HI lloyddavis I am looking through the passed week and looks like we bought seem to have had a slow week . It looks like steemit uses are not upvoting .Best of luck for the upcoming week.

you're right yes, but it seems to be coming back now. I don't know what's happening, but I think it's a reminder that we need to not rely simply on a few generous voters to always be there and keep building our audience by writing good stuff.
