Sure, there´s the money, but more important, most nation states also use war commemoration to strengthen national/nationalist identity. Something which is never done in Germany, because of our 12 years of Nazism, and I don´t mind that it is not, because I am not very national minded, I don´t even care much about football, how very un-German. 😉
Ha, yeah, we're the same with our Aussie rules football! People look at us strangely - what do you mean, you don't like footy? We must be monsters.
Absolutely, it's all about strengthening national identity. It's very unAustralian to reject the commemoration celebrations of war.
