Take Me I'll Follow by Bobby Caldwell (Interpretation)
In today's music, it is hard to filter the messages of the songs being promoted to the public. Once a song catches the attention of the people because of the rhythm, the tune, or the genre... That's it! And the message? That's the least priority.
I believe some of the contemporary songs (pop, rock, R&B, etc.) could also bring another message to the listeners, aside from what the lyricist would mean. It could be from the listener's perspective.
Here is a song from the 80's which I think could be more of a love song... (This was used in the movie Mac &Me)... But allow me to share another perspective on this.
The title of the song is Take Me I'll Follow by Bobby Caldwell.
(I capitalized the "y" in all "you's" intentionally... "You" = God)
Tired of feeling all by myself
Being so different from everyone else
Somehow You knew I needed Your help
Be my friend forever
(Time will come when we will get tired of everything... when we will feel that OUR plans in life are going nowhere... when we will feel like we have no one to help us. We feel lost. God knows everything about us. Even without saying it, He knows that we will be needing Him. He is a friend who will never leave us... a friend who will never forsake us. Read Hebrews 13:5)
I never found my star in the night
Filling my dream was far from my sight
You came along and I saw the light
We'll be friends forever
(God is our everlasting light. He is there to light our paths as we fulfill our dreams. He is ready to help us 24/7! Read John 8:12)
I can't face the thought of you leaving
So take me along, I swear I'll be strong
(Surrendering our lives to God will never be easy. We have to be strong as we face all the challenges that the enemy would throw upon us. Just like a child who doesn't want his parents to leave, perhaps for a business trip, we should feel the same way whenever we feel that we are away from God. In fact, God never leaves us... it is we who go astray and eventually forget Him.)
CHORUS:
If/When You take me wherever You go
I wanna learn the things that You know
Now that You made me believe,
I want You to take me
'Cause I long to be able to see the things that You see
Know that whatever You do...
I'll follow you
(Commit our lives to God. Let us learn His teachings. Once we commit on that, we will be able to look at the things around us differently. The way we treat others, or even respond to any circumstances will be greatly different.)
Somebody must have sent you to me
What do I have You could possibly need
All I can give is my guarantee
We'll be friends forever
(There will be people around us who will introduce God to us. Yes, apart from God, we can do nothing. He needs His children to fulfill His mission. What would be our response to the call? Read John 15:5 ; 2 Thessalonians 2:14)
Teach me more in each passing hour
By Your side I know I won't cower
Is it true that You have the power to capture this moment in time?
(As we commit our lives to God, let Him be our guide. Let Him teach us His ways. With Him, we will be at peace... We will never be afraid of anything. God moves in mysterious ways.)
Take me wherever You go
I wanna learn the things that You know
Now that You made me believe,
I want You to take me
'Cause I long to be able to see the things that You see
Know that whatever You do...
I'll follow You
P.S.
This is not to promote any religion. I just take it from my own experiences.
