Katharsisdrill recommends - Carl Nielsen - the mist disperses
For many years this small, beautiful piece for flute and harp by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen was played in the classical radio-program Ønskekoncerten over and over again, so since I was a kid I never really listened to much to it. But it is a fine piece from a composer that really mastered the melody. The simplicity of the piece makes it easily accessible to everyone, but it is still refined enough going from the melody with it's shift between major and minor chords and the more uncertain part where the flute plays trills up and down while the harp's arpeggio chords move unpredictably on.
I have always compared it to the more structured, but equally simple Valse Triste by Sibelius. Both pieces has this yearning impetus but also uncertain feeling.
The piece is performed by Mikael Beier on flute and Maria Eriksson on harp. The image of Carl Nielsen is from Den Store Danske
