I want to introduce, my album "Tribute to Eduardo M. Torner", edited 27 years ago and recently recovered in the different online music platforms. Presenting also this text recovered from the physical disk itself, who was written for the occasion by the musicologist Modesto González Cobas, chronicler and researcher of the Asturian popular music.

TORNER (Oviedo, 1888 + London, 1955)

The Asturians when we talk of TORNER, we feel the pride of refer to whom Menendez Pidal rate "Illustrious musicologist", in full youth providing to the traditional romancero, hundreds of melodies and its very thorough piece of work on the octosyllabics verse metric. The Asturians we know today that TORNER was the first who undertook the search for similarities between the old and the modern Spanish lyric, as we are reminded by Margil Frenk Alatorre (in its study "The survival of the old popular lyric", Madrid, 1960). We also know that the critics, and to the head of her professor J.B. Trend, of the University of Cambridge has considered TORNER as a "master of the Spanish folk studies". In equal measure, Homero Serís, in the Prologue to the posthumous work of TORNER, "lyrical Hispanic (relations between the people and the worship)," says: "The preparation of TORNER as competent musician and as a scholar researcher of the popular lyrics made him acquire predominant place next to Damaso Ledesma, Felipe Pedrell, Kurt Schindler and other growers in these studies."

The same author, in his "Manual of bibliography of Spanish literature" (Syracuse, New York, the Center for Hispanic Studies, 1948), sits 46 titles of music and folklore of TORNER, between 1919 and 1953. The works with which TORNER "as developed more extensively their observations on the relationship between the musical element of the song, the pace of the verse and expressive trends of the tongue were those that he published in London'.

For us, their fellow countrymen, the work more familiar and beloved of TORNER is its "Cancionero": the "Musical Songbook of popular asturian lyric", edited by the provincial government of Asturias in 1920, they have done two editions mas (1971 - 1986), introduced, by me, at the express wish of Dña. Jovita Cué, widow of TORNER, expressed in a letter dated in London, in 1969.

This "Cancionero" contains 500 melodies collected by the author, between 1910 and 1915, with its academic approach from 1912/1914, according to the teachings of the "Schola Cantorum" in Paris, which was a Distinguished Alumnus of TORNER eminent musician and director of the Center V. D'lndy.

EI "Musical Songbook of asturian popular lyric", by Eduardo Martinez Torner is, above all, for us, a fundamental book. It has inspired many national composers, and even foreigners, whose fruits have contributed to the spread of musical character of the Asturian village, eminently lyric.

Great figures of the "bel canto", as a Victora de los Ángeles and Alfredo Kraus have sung Asturian issues. The first "Tengo de subir al puerto", accompanied on guitar by Renata Tarrago. EI second "Ya no hay quien baile", arrangement and harmonization by Ruiz de Luna. The "Asturiana" of Falla, sings admirably the mezzo Teresa Berganza, accompanied on guitar by Narciso Yepes ... These examples are not unique, and have considerable entity to believe seriously in the projection of the typical Asturian regional edge, genuine, which is absolutely susceptible of a worship treatment and able alone to justify record relevant events, without the traditional melody freshness lose, charm and popular character, on the contrary, enhances and dignifies it.

These qualities reach their proper dimension in the voice of Joaquin PIXAN, tenor lyric Asturian, born in the rural areas of the municipality of Cangas del Narcea where it is still possible to find the ancestral heading of the asturianada and song of dance, interpret ideal, amply credited for brilliant results of each attempt. With this LP, PIXAN joins the Centenary of the birth of this great figure which was TORNER, that Asturias is celebrating this year 1988 with various events.

Most of the topics here are contained in the "Cancionero" of TORNER", are essentially asturian and, in its essence, the retains the voice and the spirit of PIXAN. On another occasion and also with this same tenor as interpreter, I have written that the asturianada so treated and sung, was in a position to enter into any concert hall from Spain or from other countries of the world and before any public.

Joaquin PIXAN, with the now, carries eight LP's engravings. Without doubt the most committed was the London, with its Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Jesús López Cobos, traditional asturian music by Antón García Abril and letter of Leon Delestal. That PIXAN of the Superior School of singing, of the Dry Humboldt, its debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela with the National Company, 1er. National Prize of song for tenors Miguel Fleta. That PIXAN of the courses of stage art with Tito Copobianco; the concerts in Venezuela, Mexico and the United States; the scholarship granted by the Banco Herrero to attend school for singing the scale of Milan; the ALSA scholarship to go to classes of refinement in the USA. This artistic trajectory has made PIXAN the undisputed interpreter of the music of our land that, although is documentary popular mind, "sounds", to new work; the wonder of the cloak gives them a beauty and a rich and deep unity of its rhythmic bed and harmonic. Sounds, in fact, as would say Gerardo Diego, to aristocratic tradition of "lied".

Quería presentaros en esta publicación, mi disco “Homenaje a Eduardo M. Torner”, editado hace 27 años y recuperado hace poco en las distintas plataformas de streaming o para su descarga. Acompaño con este texto extraído del propio disco, que escribió en expreso para la ocasión el musicólogo Modesto González Cobas, cronista e investigador de la música popular asturiana.

EN EL CENTENARIO DE EDUARDO MARTÍNEZ
TORNER (Oviedo, 1888 + Londres, 1955)
Los asturianos cuando hablamos de TORNER, sentimos el orgullo de referirnos a quien Menéndez Pidal califico de "ilustre musicólogo", en plena juventud aportando el Romancero tradicional centenares de melodías y su trabajo muy minucioso sobre métrica del verso octosílabo. Los asturianos sabemos hoy que TONER fue el primero que emprendió la búsqueda de analogías entre la lírica española antigua y la moderna, tal como nos lo recuerda Margil Frenk Alatorre (en su estudio "Supervivencia de la antigua lirica popular", Madrid, 1960). También sabemos, que la crítica especializada, y a la cabeza de ella el Profesor J.B. Trend, de la Universidad de Cambridge, ha considerado TORNER como el "maestro de los estudios folklóricos españoles". En igual medida, Homero Serís, en el Prólogo a la obra póstuma de TORNER, "Lírica Hispánica (Relaciones entre lo popular y lo culto)", afirma: "La preparación de TORNER como músico competente y como erudito investigador de la lirica popular le hizo adquirir lugar predominante al lado de Dámaso Ledesma, Felipe Pedrell, Kurt Schindler y otros cultivadores de estos estudios."
EI mismo autor, en su "Manual de bibliografía de la literatura española" (Syracuse, New York, Centro de Estudios Hispánicos, 1948), asienta 46 títulos de musicografía y folklore de TORNER, entre 1919 y 1953. Las obras en que TORNER "desarrollo más extensamente sus observaciones sobre la relación entre el elemento musical de la canción, el ritmo del verso y las tendencias expresivas de la lengua fueron las que publico en Londres".
Para nosotros, sus paisanos, la obra más familiar y entrañable de TORNER es su "Cancionero": el "Cancionero musical de la Lírica popular asturiana", editado por la Diputación provincial asturiana en 1920, del que se han hecho dos ediciones mas (1971 - 1986), prologadas, por mi, por expreso deseo de Dña. Jovita Cué, Vda. de TORNER, manifestado en carta fechada en Londres, en 1969.
Este "Cancionero" contiene 500 melodías colectadas por el autor, entre 1910 Y 1915, con su criterio académico a partir de 1912/1914, según las enseñanzas de la "Schola Cantorum" de Paris, de la que TORNER fue alumno distinguido del eminente músico y director del Centro V. D’lndy.
EI "Cancionero musical de la Lírica popular asturiana", de Eduardo Martínez TORNER es, sobre todo, para nosotros, un libro fundamental. En él se han inspirado muchos compositores nacionales e incluso extranjeros, cuyos frutos han contribuido a propagar el carácter musical del pueblo asturiano, eminentemente lirico.
Grandes figuras del "bel canto", como Victoria de los Ángeles y Alfredo Kraus han cantado temas asturianos. La primera "Tengo de subir al puerto", acompañada a la guitarra por Renata Tarrago. EI segundo "Ya no hay quien baile", arreglo y armonización de Ruiz de Luna. La "asturiana" de Falla, la canta admirablemente la mezzo Teresa Berganza, acompañada a la guitarra por Narciso Yepes ... Estos ejemplos no son únicos, y tienen sobrada entidad para creer en serio en la proyección del canto regional asturiano típico, genuino, que es absolutamente susceptible de un tratamiento culto y capaz por sí solo de justificar acontecimientos discográficos relevantes, sin que la melodía tradicional pierda frescura, encanto y carácter popular, al contrario, lo realza y dignifica.
Estas cualidades alcanzan su cota adecuada en la voz de Joaquín PIXAN, tenor lirico asturiano, nacido en el medio rural del Concejo de Cangas del Narcea donde aun es posible hallar la rúbrica ancestral de la asturianada y de la canción de danza, interprete ideal, sobradamente acreditado para obtener brillantes resultados de cada intento. Con este LP, PIXAN se suma al Centenario del nacimiento de esa gran figura que fue TORN ER, que Asturias está celebrando este ano de 1988 con diversos actos.
La mayoría de los temas que aquí se contienen figuran en el "Cancionero" de TORNER", son esencialmente asturianos y, en su esencia, los conserva la voz y el talante de PIXAN. En otra ocasión y también con este mismo tenor como intérprete, he dejado escrito que la asturianada así tratada y cantada, estaba en disposición de entrar en cualquier sala de concierto de España o de otros países del mundo y ante cualquier público.
Joaquín PIXAN, con el de ahora, lleva ocho LP's grabados. Sin duda, el más comprometido fue el de Londres, con su Orquesta Filarmónica, bajo la dirección de Jesús López Cobos, música asturiana de Antón García Abril y letra de León Delestal. Aquel PIXAN de la Escuela Superior de Canto, de la Seca Humboldt, de sus debuts en la Zarzuela con la Compañía Nacional, 1er. Premio nacional de canto para tenores Miguel Fleta. Aquel PIXAN de los cursos de Arte escénico con Tito Capobianco; de los conciertos en Venezuela, México y Estados Unidos; de la beca concedida por el Banco Herrero para acudir a la Escuela de Canto de la Escala de Milán; de la beca Alsa para acudir a clases de perfeccionamiento en E.E.U.U. Esta trayectoria artística ha hecho de PIXAN el interprete indiscutible de la música de nuestra tierra que, si bien es documental mente popular, "suena", a obra nueva; la maravilla del ropaje les confiere una belleza, una rica y honda unidad de su lecho rítmico y armónico. Suena, en efecto, como diría Gerardo Diego, a tradición aristocrática de "lied".
