(Roots) Reggae - the genresteemCreated with Sketch.

The socio-cultural position of (Roots) Reggae is defined by the lost optimism of the Jamaican residents for a new and better government. This led to a slower type of rocksteady: which is a more cool, and slower form of Ska with an easy and powerfull bass. The words sunny, warm, Caribian and marihuana should make the ambiance clear. Musicmap tells me how reggae became popular oversea in 1972 and how the spiritual Rastafari movement claimed the music as their subculture. The term Roots Reggae would therefore refer to the strong reflected Rastafari point of views about religion, racism, ghetto life, African roots and the use of cannabis.

The musical parameters contain a bass guitar that has an one drop rhythm and at the background staccato ska characteristics with sound effects, turntables and sound systems with a sound and feeling that feels optimistic and peacefull. The electric bass is mostly used as a talking drum with a fixed rhythm with a contrasting flying cymbal as the ‘flying' reggae pattern.

Side fact
The song ‘Boom Bye Bye' from Buju Banton is about the shooting of a homosexual person. The statement is that he wrote it after the Jamaican case of an underage boy who was raped by a homosexual. This song was the reason for Peter Tatchel to create the Reggae Compassionate Act that pleads for the canceling of writing ‘murder music'.

Thanks :) I started following you, looks interesting what you are sharing

Great article. Saw the Wailers recently. Picked up a follow from Junior Marvin (Bob Marley's Guitar player) on Twitter. Sad how they don't have a huge following on social media. Beautiful music. Tried making a song with a Reggae vibe, but it kind of went off into left field :-D

Took my 12 year old son with me to see the show:

Track I did with a bit of Reggae Vibe:

Thanks :D your song kind of sounds like a mix between dub, dancehall and reggae, which are all genres of the bigger Jamaican genre. I took my information partly from https://musicmap.info/# . It is a great website with a chart of all the existing genres and how they are linked together, although the site is less good in giving descriptions of particular genres it is useful as an overview.
