John Butler's - Ocean - The best use of a guitar I have ever seen (beware of eargasms)

Watching this always gives me shivers!

John Charles Wiltshire-Butlet, aka John Butler, was born in Torrence California, America, before moving to Australia when he was young. After picking up the guitar at 16 years old he went on to become the front man of 'The John Butler Trio' which formed in Freemantle on Australia's west coast in 1998.

The band was highly successful in Australia and overseas, and raised money for charities such as the 2004 Tsunami disaster. They also raised funds for the "Close the Gap" program which works towards providing fair health cover for indigenous Australian's.

However, John Butlers greatest pieces of music are those he composes alone.

Before the band formed, John was an experienced busker.

Setting up on street corners with an acoustic guitar. He also used simple percussion techniques, like stomping his foot or even striking his guitar as well as vocal elements. He did this from a young age and I find it easy to see his busking roots throughout his music.

Even though his music is so well composed, it still has an effortless feel. The sort that comes with performing music, essentially, for nothing. Or rather, what people think it is worth.

He has a way of not just playing the guitar, but letting it play him, so he can fully express his emotions through the instrument.

His music has always been driven by creativity and passion. Which is obvious when you watch this video of him performing his 12 minute Magnum Opus (master work) "Ocean".

I realize this song goes for nearly a quarter of an hour. But if you have any passion for music, creativity or expression through any medium, bask in the emotion that this man can pour into the world through his instrument.

Feel the crests and troughs of intensity that roll through the song like rough waves coming in with the tide. Followed by calm, as the tide retreats, before returning again with even more intensity.

When watching this I feel as though he really is letting the Ocean flow through him with all its power and pent up energy.

The expressions on his face, the effort with which he must control his body to express such an amazing piece.

This has become more than just 'a song' to him. His dedication and commitment to a craft has allowed him to share a glimpse of the inner workings of his emotional mind.

Enjoy
