'Vegarot27653-12E' - New Original Music! - Electronic/IDM/Ambient + Theory Walkthrough!

This song turned out to be

one of my favorites recently. I had initally just started screwing around with Track 1 and various sidechaining methods for the bass and harmonies, and wound up adding the beat after the fact, once I realized this could actually be a real song. I didn't want to overdo the layering of instruments, as Track 1 is already super thick and crazy, so i just added a bass, 2 harmonies, and the drum/percussion Tracks. Let's get into it!

Track 1 is essentially just 3 notes,

a C, then Bb, and F. The C has that cool wooshy/crescendo thing that happens 2x, which gives the whole thing a kind of interesting rhythm. After the first time around, it feels like we begin with Bb and F, then resolve to C, so the beginning of each section gets sort of lost in the repetition. You can check out the screenshot below to see the effect that swells in on Track 1.

Track 3, described below.

The next to come in is

Track 2, which is our bass. It plays C, Bb and G (over the Bb above), and C and C# (over the F chord). It worked out nicely, initially the bass was a little too intense, but I dropped the volume and added some reverb and it blended really well. Next is Track 3, which is an additional harmony line that plays for most of the song. It basically arppegiates a C major triad, then plays a little C mixolydian riff when the Bb and F come in.

Track 4 is the digital

percussion stuff that comes in before the "actual" drums. It just feels sort of like digital hihats or other treble-y percussion but super distorted and weird. Track 5 is the drum beat with the actual drum kit sounds, which I didn't initially think would work with the super electronic stuff happening above it, but in the end I think was a really cool addition.

Track 6, described below.

Last up is Track 6

which is pictured above in the screenshot. It's a beepy synth melody with a lot of delay, and just sort of fills in certain parts a little more. I also sidechained this to Track 4, so it fills in some of the gaps, but pulls back quite a bit to not overpower anything else.
