So this song may actually

be the one I submit for the next art contest. It came together last night, I wanted to write something in 11/8 with the horns as the basis for the song, and I really like how this came out. I'll be adding some more strings I think, which will add some more layers of harmony, as there is a lot of unison stuff happening at the moment, but for now, let's go through it as it currently is.

Listen to The Magi Sphinx here.

Tracks 1 and 2 are the

brass ensembles, with Track 1 handling most of the low end (tuba, trombones, etc), and Track 2 some of the higher end and the melody line. Track 3 is a string ensemble, which mirrors Track 2 essentially, but an octave up to give it a bit of differentiation. All of these tracks are based around 2 main sections, we have the Greenish Brown, which is our main progression: for the first 4 bars, we begin on a B every time (we're in Bminor), then a little progression at the end of each measure to take us back to B (the 4th time around we resolve to Bmajor). However, the next set of 4 bars begin with a G, to an A, then a Bminor, and finally Bmajor, before the Blue section comes in.

The Blue section is where

things get interesting. We begin on a Bmajor in Track 1, though Tracks 2 and 3 begin on an Eb and a Bb, so a tritone and maj7, super dissonant. However, despite the weirdness, I feel like this section feels pretty epic and dark, and definitely brings a nice change to the more standard progression in the Green section.

Tracks 4 and 5

are the timpanis, which mostly repeat the same basic beat, accenting our hits in the first 3 tracks. Tracks 6 and 7 are the cymbal wash and hit respectively. Tracks 8 and 9 are tubular bells and crotales, which add a nice variation in sound mixed in to the heavy and thick brass and string parts. Track 10 is a marimba, which only plays for our play sections, outlining the main chords with a cool little roll at the beginning of each measure, and finally Track 11 is a violin section which adds some little descending lines in the rest spots of Tracks 1-3.

I hope you enjoy the beginnings of this song! I'll be updating as I work on it more, so stay tuned and thanks for listening!
