Grapthar's Song of the Day: Frodus - 'The Earth Isn't Humming'
Frodus - The Earth Isn't Humming
Frodus is a really interesting band,
emerging as one of the most important post-hardcore bands of the '90s. They were formed in 1993 in Washington D.C. by Shelby Cinca (guitar, vocals) and Jason Hamacher (drums), and had a number of bassists over the life of the group. Though they toured quite a bit, the band didn't get much attention while they were together outside of the small, DIY post-hardcore scenes around the country. However, their final album, which wasn't released for two years after they broke up, finally got the band a lot of attention, particularly from critics. It's often cited as one of the great post-hardcore albums of the era.
Listen to The Earth Isn't Humming by Frodus here.
This is the second track
on that final release, And We Washed Our Weapons in the Sea, which finally came out in 2001. I actually discovered this song through a cover by Thrice, and for a while didn't know it was even a Frodus tune. The song is a great example of their sound, with heavy, driving bass and drum pattern, and the sort of sparse, dissonant guitar work over the top. Shelby's vocals aren't anything wild, but I think they work perfectly with their sound, and really round out the song. In the last ten years, a lot of band's with this sort of sound have come around again, but I don't think anything compares to the originals.

Should this read 8 March, not Feb?
Haven’t thought about Frodus in ages. Thanks for the reminder dude. They played the 100 cap spot in town a decade+ ago and whipped complete ass.
Wasn’t joe from fugazi in this band?
Nice, I never got to see them live.
I know they had something like 10 bassists, maybe he played with them at some point?
