Grapthar's Song of the Day: X "Nausea"

X - Nausea
X were one of the single most
influential of the 1st wave LA Punk bands. They were formed in 1977 by singer Exene Cervenka, singer and bassist John Doe, drummer D.J. Bonebrake, and guitarist Billy Zoom. This era of punk wasn't as fast as the later "hardcore-punk" bands of the DC and New York areas, and incorporated a lot more of the timbre and song structures of '50s and '60s rock/pop songs. X was also known for Billy Zoom's incredible guitar style, which used a lot of ideas from country and rockabilly, over the dark harmonies and lyrics of the rest of the band.
Listen to Nausea by X here.
This song is probably their "heaviest",
and doesn't fit the '50s rock aesthetic I mentioned before. The main guitar riff is AWESOME, so dark. We are in Eminor, and the riff plays a D then slides up to F then to E, then UP to a G before resolving to E. The use of the F natural, a simple flat 2, makes all the difference, and makes this song sound so dark. The Chorus gets a bit catchier, although they still get nice and dissonant with the fourth chord each time around. If you've never watched it, check out their performance of this on the documentary "The Decline of Western Civilization" (the first one); it's absolutely mindblowing.
Wow it's a good song heavy like you said but sounds very modern even though its older.
You wrote abut Nausea but linked and embedded Johnny Hit and Run Pauline. :) Both great songs. I pretty much like everything X put out. I broke a car dashboard once, drumming along to Los Angeles. I tend to really get into loud fast music. :)
Ooops haha just fixed it. Thanks for telling me, I had both songs open, copied the wrong tab.
haha yes they are so great, I can imagine destroying a dashboard or two.
