The Doors - People Are Strange

The Doors are another of

the all time greats in Rock History, and have continued to influence generation after generation of musicians. I find them super interesting; they were a lot darker than most of the other rock bands of the time, and they used a unique array of instruments, having a piano/organ fill in for guitar or bass, depending on the song, along with horns and strings on some later songs. They definitely have a unique sound, and approached rock music from a different angle than their contemporaries from England. Their chord choices alone are super unique and worth dissecting from a theory perspective.

This was the first Doors' song

I heard as a kid. It was on a skate video I loved at the time, Rodney Mullen Vs. Daewon Song 2, during Rodney Mullen's downtown LA session. I loved the guitar line, it's blues influenced for sure, but has a sinister sort of feeling to it. The Verse's are interesting, they begin on a B7, which should feel like it wants to resolve to Eminor since we open with an arpeggiated E minor chord establishing the key, but it drops down to G, which is an awesome effect. It does work, as G is the relative major of E minor, but it doesn't feel super satisfying, so the second time around when they linger on the B7 then descend down to E, it feels really pleasing. They definitely have a knack for utilizing dissonant tensions in their songs.
