The Beatles/Paul McCartney - Step Inside Love/Los Paranoias (Medley)

Paul McCartney is clearly

one of the greatest songwriters of the last century, and possible in the history of Western music. In The Beatles, he was responsible for some of the most popular and memorable rock songs, and continued to write really original music throughout his solo career and time in Wings. There are lots of songs that were never released on Beatles albums, and some of them, like this one, are really incredible.

This song was written

for singer Cilla Black, as a theme song for her television show that was premiering. Paul recorded this demo version during the White Album sessions, though he does not appear in the final version Black released. I love the bossanova/early jazz sort of feeling of the Verses, and how the rock and roll Chorus really stands out, yet flows perfectly. In the verse, we get a really complex chord progression. We are in D major, and Paul plays a Dmajor, to an Amin7, Ab7#9, G, Gmin7, to an F#7#9. It's SO cool and smooth, with the chromatic bass notes keeping things moving. After this, we have an F, to G7 to A7 (an awesome move, using the F natural in D major), before using a IV, V7, I to resolve back into the Chorus.

This version of the tune

includes a second song, which sounds like Paul and John just sort of messing around and having some fun. They say the name of a silly, made up band, then go into the song "Los Paranoias", which also has a cool progression, though significantly simpler. Again they use a Dominant 7 #9 chord, this time on C, and down to an F.
