Steely Dan - Josie

Steely Dan was formed in 1972

by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who remained in the band throughout many lineup changes. I actually didn't grow up on Steely Dan and for some reason always thought of them as a southern rock band, but five or six years ago, my friend made me sit down and listen, and I was blown away. They combined super complex harmonic ideas from jazz, rhythm and blues, motown and rock and created some of the most interesting music that has ever become popular in the mainstream.

Listen to Josie by Steely Dan here.

This is the closing track

from their 1977 album Aja, and is the perfect example of their insane originality. The opening riff, which always closes the tune, is incredible, and uses super advanced harmonic and rhythmic concepts. The rest of the song is a little more straight forward, though it still sounds very different than most other bands of the time. Their is a sort of funk element to the syncopated guitar lines in the Verses that really keeps the song moving.

Enjoy today's song! Thanks for checking out my blog, and Steem On!

Gotta love that funky guitar and the vocal harmonies. The chorus breaks up the funkyness nicely. Very cool tune!
