Grapthar's Song of the Day: Fugazi - 'Caustic Acrostic'
Fugazi - Caustic Acrostic
Since I shared an Embrace song,
and then a tune from One Last Wish, I figured it would only be logical to now share a song from the combination of those two groups. One Last Wish members Guy Picciotto (guitar/vocals) and Brendan Canty (drums) got together with Ian MacKaye (guitar/vocals) from Embrace and his fellow Dischord Record owner Joe Lally (bass) to form Fugazi. Picciotto was actually the last to join, after initially coming to one of the trio's early practices and feeling like he couldn't be a part of the group, they eventually brought him as a permanent member, which was vital to what would become the Fugazi sound. Both he and MacKaye handled songwriting duties, and would often alternate lead vocals, though there are many tracks where they work together. This song comes from the band's 1998 album End Hits, which is an album that took a while for me to really get into, though I now consider an absolute favorite. The guitars on the track are awesome and super weird, going from more melodic to really dissonant and strange, which work well with Picciotto's strained, intense vocal style.
