FEAR - We Destroy the Family

FEAR were one of the

original LA Punk bands, and helped to shape and define the genre. They were formed in 1977 by singer/guitarist Lee Ving and bassist Derf Scratch, though over the years they've had a number of line up changes, with Ving being the only mainstay over the decades (Flea of RHCP has played with the group too, along with some other LA notables). They became nationally renowed after a performance on Saturday Night Live in 1981 when the audience and band became too wild, and the live feed was cut. Ving is actually an incredible singer, and came from a tradition of blues and rock and roll which brought a really interesting element to the group.

Listen to We Destroy the Family by FEAR here.

This song is from their

debut full length, (FEAR) The Record, released in 1982. The band was often focused on trying to offend the sensibilities of the average, "normal" American, and song titles like this exemplify this attitude, along with others such as Let's Start a War and I Don't Care About You. This song has a really interesting and complex rhythm, using an odd-meter, though I can't imagine the band thought about this specifically; rather, they were interested in pushing boundaries lyrically and musically, and that resulted in ideas like this coming to fruition. I love the dissonance and intensity of the guitar parts, they have a really grimey and dirty vibe that works perfectly with the lyrical themes.

Enjoy today's song! Thanks for checking out my blog, and Steem On!
