Star Fleet Project - Star Fleet

Star Fleet Project was a

sort "super-group" project, formed by Brian May of Queen, Eddie Van Halen, Alan Gratzer of REO Speedwagon, Fred Mandel (a studio musician who played with Queen), and Phil Chen (another session player, on bass). They only released a single album, with 3 tracks. Roger Taylor of Queen fame also appeared on the album to do some backing vocals. The album was technically released as a "Brian May and Friends" album, so the name Star Fleet Project for the album AND the general group is a bit confusing.

While I am not particularly partial

to the final 2 tracks on the album, the opening song and title track is really interesting. It definitely has a bit of '80s cheese involved, but the Chorus uses a really interesting, epic sort of chord progression that definitely fits with the space epic theme. May's guitar leads are also really great here, and it's cool to hear the tone of his famous guitar used on songs outside of Queen. Eddie Van Halen and May work well together here, complimenting each other's parts without trying to out-do the other.
