Bill Withers - Who Is He (And What Is He To You)?

Bill Withers is an American musician

and singer/songwriter who wrote R&B/Soul/Rock music from 1970 into the '80s. He was an incredible singer, and played both keyboards and piano. His album Still Bill, released in 1972, is my personal favorite, and had the hit singles Lean On Me and Use Me, along with a lot of other incredible tracks.

Check out the song here!

This song is my favorite

on the album. The guitar and bass it opens with are SO cool; super dark and utilizing some interesting dissonances between the two instruments. It's simple, but makes the song stand out from other pop/soul at the time period. The lyrics fit the mood too, telling a story of a man walking with his girlfriend/love interest when she notices another man, and our story teller realizes they have some kind of history and becomes jealous. The vocal melody is amazing too, Withers has an great voice and really makes you feel the pain in the story.

Hope you enjoy the song! Thanks for checking out my blog!

Very well said!

I’ve loved this song since I heard it on the Jackie brown soundtrack.

“& when I looked at you,
you looked at the ground,

Daw gone it, who is he & what is he to you !”

yeah! Forgot it was on that soundtrack. Such a cool tune.
