Grapthar's Song of the Day: Big Walnuts Yonder - 'Ready to Pop!'
Big Walnuts Yonder - Ready to Pop!
Big Walnuts Yonder is a sort of
supergroup, who came together to record a single album, though I don't believe they've ever actually played any gigs together. The band is made up of Nick Reinhart (guitar, from Tera Melos), Nels Cline (guitar, from Wilco), Greg Saunier (drums, from Deerhoof), and Mike Watt (bass, legendary member of Minutemen, fIREHOSE, etc., etc.). The project started backstage in Ireland, where both Watt and Reinhart were playing with their respective bands. Reinhart had been complimenting Watt on a solo album of his, and specifically referenced the guitar work of Nels Cline. Watt suggested the three of them should try and make something together, and after Reinhart brought in Saunier, the line-up was formed. Though they all had agreed, it took two years before they got into the studio 2014, and the album itself wasn't released until three years later. It's a wild, strange album, with some of the coolest, weirdest songwriting ever. It has rock, funk, and pop elements, but in timbre sounds like something very experimental. The combination of all of the musicians' styles is evident, yet still cohesive in an odd way.
