Pixies - Weird at My School

I went a bit of a Pixies bender today

while driving around, and figured I'd try and pick an interesting, lesser known song for today's post. Although I didn't really discover the band until my mid '20s, I now consider the Pixies to be one of my absolute favorite bands, and can sit down really anytime and enjoy any of their albums. The band was first formed in 1986 in Boston, MA by singer/guitarist Black Francis (stage name for Charles Thompson IV), singer/bassist Kim Deal, lead guitarist Joey Santiago, and drummer David Lovering. That line-up stayed together until 1993, releasing 4 full length albums, before their very acrimonious and public breakup. The group wound up reuniting with that same line-up in 2004, however Deal left the band in 2013 and was temporarily replaced by another Kim, Kim Shattuck, before the band recruited Paz Lenchantin, who has remained a permanent member since 2016, and has written and performed on their newest albums. Today's song choice was originally a B-side on the band's 1989 Monkey Gone to Heaven single, which came from their classic Doolittle album. Musically, it's a super interesting song; the verses are built around a riff in C#min, which hangs out on the tonic, then drops a tritone to G, then up to B, befor repeating. When they move into the Chorus, that B acts like a V chord for Emin, which we resolve to, giving us a really clean and effective modulation.
