'A Single Thing' - New Original Music/Quick Progression Writing Practice Session! Jazz/Solo-Piano/Instrumental + Walkthrough!
This isn’t going to be
a particularly long one, as the song (progression really, not even a song yet lol) is only a minute-ish long, and uses a single, lone piano. Initially, I was going to do a ten minute timed challenge, but I decided to just try and write a single progression, with a little melody line on top, as quickly as possible, though not technically with a time limit. I probably spent about twelve minutes here, and was fortunate as the way it sounds now is NOTHING like how it began, but through a series of happy accidents morphed into a pretty cool little thing.

The only instrument in
the mix is Track 1, a single ‘soft piano’ from Spitfire Audio’s LABS. After writing this, I experimented with added two other tracks, strings and synths, but I hated the result so those are blanked out in the above overview screenshot. I’ll just list the chords in the progression here, so you can follow along if you so choose. We begin on a Dmaj7, then to an F#minor, which feels like our tonic, though things get a bit less obvious as the progression continues. We then have a little descending bass line, with an Ebmin7, to Fmin, to Esus2 on top, before holding a D6sus2 for a whole measure. Next up is a Dmaj13, F#min7, Ebmin7, Fmin, Esus2, and finally, a D6sus2 again before we repeat the whole thing. A single melody line is added on top for the next two times through, which has some cool little jazzy dissonances throughout.

I like to do some song engineering using Korg Gadget. It's a very different creative process when designing the song with a planned arrangement, vs. jamming along with an instrument to live music.
What application are you using?
cool, I've never used Korg Gadget before, it looks pretty awesome though, definitely want to try it one day. This was in Ableton, using a free piano VST from Spitfire Audio.
