The Kinks - Victoria

The Kinks are definitely one of the biggest

names in rock and roll history, and a band that has inspired countless generations of musicians and artists. Most people are at least aware of the band, mostly from their massive hit singles, which is where I was around five or six years ago, until I spent a few days really diving into their discography, and was blown away by what I found. While their hit singles are catchy, they're often the least interesting musically (at least to me); the band utilized some really awesome and often complex musical ideas, which immediately caught my ear. The Kinks were first formed in 1964 in North London by two brothers, Ray and Dave Davies, and were a part of the initial British invasion, but infamously were banned from touring because the two brothers would get into such severe fights. Despite this, the band continued to grow through the decade and by the late '60s, like many other big names of the time (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, etc.) began to really expand their sound, experimenting with new songwriting and production techniques. This song is the opening track on the band's 1969 album Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire, which was a concept album of sorts, and originally planned to be the soundtrack for a TV musical, though that never materialized. This song is probably the 'catchiest' on the album, and most straight-forward, but its one of those songs that when I first hear it, I instantly get the same, excited vibe as when I first discovered it.
