Drumming and Pow Wow of the Algonquin Indians of Golden Lake Pride of First Nations

in #music7 years ago

In a few weeks, I will get to attend a traditional Pow Wow of the Algonquin Indians of the Pickwaknagan on Golden Lake, Ontario. This Reserve is located about a 30 minute drive from our home. I enjoy these people and their traditional ways. Follow me to learn a little about them.

The Anishinabe language is part of the Algonquian language family. The Anishinabe language has only 17 letters.

Marriage between members of the same group was not accepted, even if they were not related. It was a necessity that the spouse come from another group. Summer occasions were important to the balance the group; it was the only opportunity to meet a soul mate from another clan. Generally, the couple united for life.

Takinagans were used to transport babies. They were made of wood and covered with a casing made of leather or fabric. The baby was in a standing position, with his feet resting on a board. The mother could then place the takinagan on her back. This allowed the child to observe his environment and thus begin to learn how everyday tasks were accomplished. The takinagan also had the advantage of floating, which probably saved the lives of several babies during the capsizing of a boat.

Philosophy
Our philosophy is to only take what you need; give in order to receive; recognize that you are an equal part of all that is; and be thankful for everything that you get. Many teachings relate to the Creator. Our teachings are not rigid and can be interpreted in different ways. It is encouraged that each person develop their own special relationship with the Creator. It is this difference, this uniqueness with the Creator that creates meaning.

Great post!

Thank you. I am kinda proud of the unique and diverse culture our great country has.

There is so much to learn from our First Nations, it is so sad to see many of them in the streets, hungry and with drug or alcohol abuse problems... Especially here in the west, where colonization only happened in the last century, the wounds are so recent.

yes it is so sad. This is why I post about the good we see in these people. We have our issues with First Nations here as well, but we need to remember that there is good in everyone.

This is a great post -- thank you for sharing it!
