Brit Drozda - Make Something Beautiful | Album Review

in #music5 years ago

Having already come across Brit’s last single, “Ribbon” - featured by FTLOB here - it was a delight to find that her latest album is being released today, June 7th. The record not only includes this gem, but another 10 songs that she and Producer Jason Scavone have wonderfully brought to life. Entitled "Make Something Beautiful", the album is actually a call to action for her listeners to put something beautiful out into the world. Be it art, a song or even an act of kindness - it is also a work which gently reminds us that the best things in life are often the simplest.

For those unaware, Brit Drozda is a Folk-Rock Singer Songwriter based in North Carolina, with some New York roots. Her songwriting chops and vocal delivery often call on fellow female inspirations from Sheryl Crow to Norah Jones to Patty Griffin. This record is an amalgamation of all of those influences, but it is singularly Brit. Simultaneously classic and fresh, youthful but ultimately wise, and orbiting around pop piano compositions which often extend into Folk sensibilities and Americana instrumentation - this collection is meant for anyone feeling, thinking and longing for something to make their worlds just a little more beautiful.

Starting from the title track’s brilliantly sequenced piano arpeggios, Brit sets the tone with an ode to all of the creators, artists, relatives and strangers that contribute to our culture, to our well-being, to our hearts. “Free” expands on these expressions of beauty and wonder through a more upbeat guitar driven piece. But it is one of the standouts on the album, “Together” - which boldly breaks from this free-spirited whimsy, mid-record - through a frank description of the difficulties in a once-unified relationship that now shares more distance, than intimacy. This song subtly rebalances the collection here, allowing for the dramas to continue to unfold beautifully on both “Breathe” and “This Too Shall Pass”. Make no mistake - amidst the beauty and whimsy and exuberance often found in the lyrics and music she creates - there is also a substantive undercurrent of resiliency in Brit’s writing. It is likely this trait of resiliency, which allows her to so clearly see and appreciate the simplicity and beauty in the things around her.

Perhaps no track captures all of the poignancy and poeticism; all of the seemingly paradoxical positivity and melancholy of Brit’s spirit - as can be heard in “Perfect to Pieces”. A gorgeous piano allows her gentle cadence to cooly take the spotlight, until crashing into a danceable rhythm track that gives lift to her reminiscence of a time passed, with a joy and buoyancy befitting of Brit’s demeanour - all while clearly being melancholic and longfully missing those moments she can’t go back to. The instrumentation that her and Jason manage to incorporate here, also happen to capture the best sounds of the album too: Piano chords that perfectly emote, Guitar and Bass-driven rhythmic sections that collectively dance alongside her soulful poetic vocals - all of which are supported by lush organs and percussive starts and stops that crescendo, break down and restart again. It’s a perfect mid-point for the spirit of the album.

The throwback brilliance of “Change Tomorrow”, “No Way” and “The Best Part” each simultaneously speak to the classic inspirations that help make up the bundled tapestry of Brit’s being, perfectly anchoring the record while showing immeasurable range. Completed by the aforementioned banjo-pickin’, euphoric “Ribbon” - Brit Drozda has truly made something beautiful. Showcasing her songwriting, her whimsical spirit and her breadth as a performer, it is a beauty-filled walk through Americana, Folk and Pop that might naturally become the soundtrack for your own inspired moments of creating something beautiful.
