I welcome you to another episode of STEEMIT MUSIC. It is sure going to be a great time as we tour the world of music. In our last three discussion, we have been considering common terminologies used in music. We clearly stated that language is a form of communication, and speaking/understanding the music language or basic common terminologies in music yield great performance. Today, we shall move further into some more terminologies, I believe the terms we have previously considered have become your day-to-day language in your sphere of musical influence. Lets go:

NATURAL - A symbol in sheet music that returns a note to its original pitch after the effect of a sharp or flat.

NOCTURNE - A musical composition that has a romantic or dreamy character with nocturnal associations, or a night-piece, music that evokes a nocturnal mood.

NONET - A nonet is a piece for nine performers or the name for a group of nine performers.

NOTATION - Notation is the method of writing music down, practices of which have varied during the course of history, first developed in the 8th century.

NOTE - This is either a single sound or its representation in notation, also refers to a single sound as a tone.

OCTAVE - The interval between two adjacent notes of the same name, it is referred to as an interval of an eighth.

OCTET - An octet is a composition for eight performers or the name for a group of eight performers.

ORCHESTRA - A large group of instrumentalists consisting of woodwind, brass, string and percussion sections playing together.

ORGAN - This is a keyboard instrument in which the sound is produced by air passing through pipes of various size and construction to give a wide variety of pitches and timbres.

OVERTURE - An overture is an orchestral composition forming the prelude or introduction to an opera or other large musical work.

PAD - A sustained note - usually played by the keyboard player.

PEDAL - This is a hardware tool, effect or tuner on the floor of the stage used by guitarists and bass players. Keyboard players use one for sustain. Drummers have at least two - one for the kick and one for the hi-hat.

PENTATONIC - A scale having five tones to the octave.

PERCUSSION - The percussion includes all instruments that are played by being struck, shaken or scratched.

PHRASE - A single line of music played or sung. A musical sentence or a complete musical thought.

PIANO - An instruction in sheet music to play softly. It is abbreviated by a “p”.

PITCH - The pitch of a note refers to the frequency of its vibrations.

POCKET - The place where the tempo and groove of a song feels the most comfortable.

PRELUDE - A movement or section of a work that comes before another movement or section of a work. It is a short piece originally preceded by a more substantial work, however not lengthy enough to be considered an overture.

PRESTO - A instruction in sheet music indicating the tempo is to be very fast.

PRIMA DONNA - A musician who feels and acts entitled.

PROGRESSION - Progression is the movement of chords in succession.

QUARTET - A quartet is a composition for four players or the name for a group of four players.

QUINTET - A quintet is a composition for five players or the name for a group of five players.

RECAPITULATION - This terminology is synonymous to a reprise.

REED - This is the piece of cane in wind instruments. The players cause vibrations by blowing through it in order to produce sound.

REFRAIN - * Refrain is a repeating phrase that is played at the end of each verse in the song, like the chorus of hymns.*

REPRISE - This is repeating a phrase or verse or returning to the original theme.

REST - The rest is a symbol in sheet music used to indicate silence in music.

RHYTHM - This is the element of music pertaining to time.

RIDE - The ride is sometimes used to indicate a guitar solo, it is also a kind of cymbal.

ROOT - The principal note of a triad.
