Angelic Upstarts - Solidarity
Give them hope give them strength give them live
Like a candle burning in the black of night
We're all with you in our hearts and in our minds
And we'll pray for our nation through its darkest times
Angelic Upstarts are my favourite punk band. My outer-conscious brain regularly tunes into their songs. You know the feeling when some seemingly unrelated events, images, smells, ... trigger associations and song starts playing in your head? This is it!
Imagine my surprise when I've learned that Angelic Upstarts are still alive and kicking. Punk on, friends!
Solidarity
The song was written (and released in 1983) as a gesture of support for the Polish workers and their struggle for their rights through the Solidarność union movement.
In a way, the movement, with their legendary leader Lech Walesa succeeded in their battle. But who knows what powers behind helped them? It was the first step from socialism into the deeps of capitalism.
Hope
Still, this song resonates the strongest vibration of hope for me. It is a great song by a great band.
Better and better!
