Free Falling with Tom Petty

in #music7 years ago

It’s a few days since Tom Petty died. There seemed to have been a bit of confusion at first as to whether it was fake news or not, but ultimately it seems that another music legend walks on this earth no more.

He was a lot of things to a lot of people. I loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – the Full Moon Fever album. ‘Won’t Back Down’ and ‘Runnin’ Down a Dream’ are great, but Free Falling gets my vote for one of the top 100 songs of our times.

Funny, it wasn’t till he died that I knew that he wrote so much with Jeff Lynne of ELO. Musically I wouldn’t have put them together. I loved ELO, too, but they have a very different vibe (I think).

And he was a member of The Travelling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison. How’s that for a line up!

I guess it was the Travelling Wilburys that birthed the great version of ‘While my guitar gently weeps’, which was part of the 2004 tribute to George Harrison and featured this amazing guitar solo from Prince

Long live the music.
