Songs I Love To Play: Black (Pearl Jam Cover)
"Black" was on the first Pearl Jam album, Ten, back in 1991. I was in a rock cover band at the time, and we raced to learn a few of the songs. "Black" was one of them. And I did my best Eddie Vedder impersonation, sneering the words in an I do not care posture, flannel shirt tied around my waist and winning over the crowd with my moodiness...
Years later, I was playing a solo acoustic show in Colorado. Someone actually requested "Black". I had never thought of doing it without a band, but it's a cool song, so why not give it a go? It became quickly a regular in my set lists, and has been now for about five years. And why not? It's a cool song, from a cool album. People like it, and it always seems to go over well. So...it's become a part of what I do on stage. I'd play it in a band again in a heartbeat, but it's also fun to do on my own.
Yeah, I know...I do the ending all wrong...but that's the way I've been able to make it work, and make it a bit of my own. I hope you like this!
