I took inspiration from John Cage's Perilous Night. “Perilous Night concerned the loneliness and terror that comes to one when love becomes unhappy”. Perilous Night comes from a negative mindset in Cage’s life when he was struggling with his separation from his girlfriend. A prepared piano is a piano in which the timbre has been altered by the insertion between the strings of bolts, screws, rubber erasers, and other objects; it was developed by John Cage (Partridge, 2011). Prepared piano pieces such as John Cage’s album ‘Music for Prepared Piano’ (Cage, 2001) and Aphex Twin’s ‘diak prepcalrec2 barn dance [slo]’ and diskhat ALL prepared1mixed 13’ (James, 2017) evokes a mysterious, dark feeling which inspired the music used within the ‘Creeping’ scene in ‘I Must be Thought’. This is to enhance the empathetic effect of the main characters awareness that the bad thought (represented by the monster) that creeps around his mind is trying to ruin his life. Between 1943 and 1948, Cage began to develop the prepared piano; he tried to explore the maximum use of objects inside the piano. Perilous Night (1943-44) was the first large work for the prepared piano. I approached the utilisation of the prepared piano by using two varying types of structures and tonality, placing random objects on the piano and in-between the piano strings. Experimenting with different playing procedures such as scraping, pinging, percussive knocks on the piano and pressing the keys on the piano. This led to a sinister sound work that successfully depicts a confused mind, achieving an empathic effect. When the main character states ‘Everything becoming more confusing’ I used chance operations with the different sounds, a technique John Cage also commonly used.
