#musicdiscovery - New Zealand Music Month - The Best Of The Rest

in #music6 years ago

The month of May is New Zealand month, and because I am from New Zealand I have been sharing music from my homeland. Today I thought I would share a few random tracks and bands that I have missed during New Zealand music month.

Six60

Six60 is a five piece band formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 2008 by a group of univeristy friends. Six60 have a diverse range of musical sounds and influences, from drum'n'bass, electronica and soul to blues and r'n'b. They rose to popularity in New Zealand with the releases 'Rise up' and 'Dont forget your roots'. Here is the song Dont Foget your Roots:

The name Six60 came from the fact that the members lived together in Dunedin at 660 Castle Street - the video above shows Dunedin and the typical flats and student life in New Zealand.

Six60 continue to record and perform in New Zealand, with their last album being released in 2015.The latest album Six60 (2) spawned the highly popular single White Lines, which again showcased parts of New Zealand and the culture in the music video:

Flight of the Conchords

The Flight of the Conchords is a comedy music duo from New Zealand consisting of Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie - the duo also had and HBO tv series by the same name which ran for 2 seasons. The duo produce lighthearted parody style music, often performed accoustically, and in the style of hip hop, pop and folk music. Heres one of their more lighthearted and strange songs 'Ladies of the World':

Both Jermaine and Bret have appeared in Hollywood movies - Jermaine has a part in Men in Black 3, and Bret was the music supervisor for The Muppets movie for which he won an Academy Award for best original song. In 2012 Flight of the Conchords wrote a song Feel Inside (and Stuff like that) to help raise money for Cure Kids in New Zealand. The song fetures some prominent New Zealand musicians and the video below has some great and humerous interviews at the beginning:

The Naked and Famous

The Naked and Famous are one of my favorite kiwi artists of the last few years, with a unique blend of Indie, Electronica and pop/rock. They have toured and travelled extensively around the world sharing the great sounds. The Naked and Famous have released 3 albums, with the latest being 2016s 'Simple Forms'. My favorite album was the debut album Passive Me, Agressive You. Probably the best know single from this album is Young Blood:

Kimbra

Although I am not to familair with alot of her music, Kimbra deserves a special mention as she was only the third New Zealander to win a Grammy for the single with Australian singer Gotye 'Somebody That I Used To Know'. I haven't listened to much of her other music, but it seems she contonues to produce music and has released an album this year.

Wow, the video on Youtube has over 1 billion views - thats incredible!

I hope you have enjoyed my selection of music from New Zealand, I have certainly enjoyed sharing it with you all!

Kimbra and Gotye much like! Very artsy and his voice reminds me of Sting (not a bad thing).

Glad you enjoyed!

Nice selection! I hope Jemaine shave s that Mo off soon (or was it just for Movember?) - he looks like a slimmer, taller Ron Jeremy!

Hahaha I hope to - mo's are gross
