in #music6 years ago

Learn how to use Autinn's Jette Oscillator for VCV Rack.

What Will I Learn?

  • You will learn about the functionality of Autinn's Jette module
  • You will learn about harmonics or overtones in a sound
  • You will learn how the eight controls change the harmonics of the ocsillator
  • You will learn how the 3-way selector create new waveforms

Requirements

To complete this tutorial learners will need to have the following:

  • VCV Rack installed
  • Autinn's module pack installed

Difficulty

This tutorial is at a beginner level.

Description

Learn about the functionality of Autinn's Jette module

Autinn's Jette is a voltage controlled oscillator. Jette is unique in that we are provided with eight slides which controls the amplitude (volume) of eight harmonics which make up the waveform.

Jette has an input for control voltage which controls the frequency output of the oscillator.

Learn about harmonics or overtones in a sound

Practically every sound heard has composed of a fundamental (lowest frequency) and numerous harmonics or overtones. All these elements give the waveform its character. When any sound is examined with a frequency analyzer we can see the relationship between all these elements. In this tutorial I use Bogaudio's Analyzer module to examine the frequencies of all these elements.

Learn how the eight controls change the harmonics of the ocsillator

The slider to the far left on the user interface adjusts the amplitude of the fundamental. If we turn all the other sliders down to zero and the fundamental up we will see a sine way in our Scope display. This is the same of all three of the waveforms available with out 3-way selector.

As we increase the slider for any of the remaining eight sliders will see changes in both the Analyzer and Scope displays. We will see the sine wave change shape and we will see a harmonic appear and increase in amplitude. We will also hear this harmonic increase in our sound.

Each of the seven sliders controls the amplitude of one of the wavefrom's overtones.

Learn how the 3-way selector create new waveforms

Jette gives us a 3-way selector which changes the wavefrom from the oscillator. The variables in these three selections are the frequency range of all the overtones and the relationship between the amplitude of the fundamental and each of the overtones. Selection 1, 2 and 3 will provide distinct results - sine, triangle, saw (ramp).

I hope you enjoy this tutorial. If you have any specific questions for me feel free to leave it in the comments of this post and I will do my best to get back to you with an answer.
