MASTODON Albums ranked from "less great" to great

in #music7 years ago

Mastodon is an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 2000, the group is composed of bassist Troy Sanders, guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor. During the 90's, "metal" was "represented" by Pantera, and as the most prominent name of the new millennium it is Mastodon. If you combine styles of bands like Yes, Rush or Pink Floyd with Black Sabbath and a typical American ultra-aggressive metal, then you might get something like Mastodon. Their discography with stylistic distinction broke the monotony of metal music, and after seventeen years of action and seven studio albums, the band is still bringing new music.

7. Emperor of Sand
Their latest studio album is a little softer. Created on heavy emotions due to personal tragedies, love for life, great struggle, victory and loss ... The band has shown that they are highly developed as can be seen in many details. The album is new and has not sat down yet, but I believe that time will show its true value.
Favorite tracks: Steambreather, Roots Remain

6. Remission
Their debut album, released in 2002. A brutal and chaotic record similar to the band Today is the Day in which Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher performed a year before the Mastodon. Vocals were shared betwen Sanders and Hinds though rarely that any one really sings something. The album is an explosion announcing the "Leviathan".
Favorite tracks: March of the Fire Ants, Elephant Man

5. Once More 'Round the Sun
I really do not know what to say about this album. Good continuation of "Hunter" but a bit more limp. This album definitely confirmed bend's mainstream 'juicy & fruits' sound.
Favorite tracks: Asleep in the Deep, Feast Your Eyes, Aunt Lisa

4. Crack the Skye
The fourth band album represents element of ether. The band's previous albums featured elements of fire (Remission), Water (Leviathan) and Earth (Blood Mountain), so the only classic element that does not represent any album is air. Crack the Skye is the first studio album to feature drummer Brann Dailor as the band's third lead vocalist.
Favorite tracks: Oblivion, Divinations, Crack the Skye

3. Leviathan
The album is the group's first concept album and is loosely based on the Herman Melville novel „Moby-Dick“. Less chaotic than the predecessor with much more melodies, and you can also notice acoustic guitars and more jazz drumming. This release separated Mastodon from other modern metal bands.
Favorite tracks: Blood and Thunder, Seabeast, Iron Tusk, Aqua Dementia

2. Blood Mountain
Blood Mountain is a concept album about climbing up a mountain, about that whole struggle, and the different things that can happen to you. The band's emphasis on more clean melodic vocals instead of the harsher vocals that the band used on their early work continues to grow on this album.
Favorite tracks: The Wolf is Loose, Hunters of the Sky, This Mortal Soil

1. The Hunter
And I know, you are now wondering how this album is in the first place. But honestly, I do not know the answer. Maybe this is because of the time that reminds me of this album or because this album is the perfect blend of everything the band has made on the first four albums. "The Hunter" clearly shows that Mastodon doesn't want to be only a metal band. Mastodon has accumulated many music ways to go, bu when they make a hybrid of everything, just like "The Hunter", then they justify their name.
Favorite tracks: Black Tongue, Stargasm, Spectrelight, Bedazzled Fingernails
