Music for working/programming/writing. Music for CONCENTRATING.

First, a mini grand theory of music for working

  1. The most important thing about music you do mental work to: It can't have intelligible lyrics/singing/talking in a language you know.
Our dumb heads can't process more than one language stream at once. Does this mean it has to be instrumental? Kinda. But it's not as limited as you think. Keep reading.
  2. Accept that a lot of music good for working is not necessarily likable or otherwise good.
Not gonna get into specifics. But I work to some embarrassing ass music. At the same time: it helps me get work done. So when you see other people recommending good work music that you know is bad, pause before you dismiss it. They might think it's bad, too! Doesn't mean it's not effective for getting work done.

Some favorites. As referenced above, not necessarily good music, but good for working. NO JUDGMENT ZONE.

  • http://musicforprogramming.net/  "Music for programming" is what it's called. But between me and you: You don't have to use it for programming. (I don't!) This is a regularly updated list of mostly EDM playlists. Lotsa different episodes, some are too "HYPER!" for me, but most of them are good. Side note: really great site design.
  • Any music service that lets you browse by "activity." Google Play, for example, has whole section for working. (screenshot below)

  • ME: Mopey moany baroque music. Like with strings.
    YOU:
ME: LIKE NOT WITH ELECTRONIC BEATS.
YOU: Is that a band, or
    ME: LIKE CLASSICAL MUSIC
    YOU: I'm not familiar.
    ME: I'll see myself out.
  • The Social Network Soundtrack (trent reznor). Probably most shameful thing on this list coz it's so corny obvious. But it's so perfect. Even though it's all electronic and beepy, it has a lot in common with baroque music above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yydZbVoCbn0
  • I haven't actually tried it, but a writer I like talks about something called "brown noise," which she said was less abrasive than white noise. Again. Not endorsing. But I think it's worth at least bringing up the world of non-musical sound.
