7 Interesting Facts About Oasis

in #music9 years ago

Here are seven facts about the English britpop band Oasis that you (probably) didn't know about. Let's get right into it.

1. Best Seller

Their second studio album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was the best-selling album of the 90's beating Spice Girls and Madonna. It was also the album with the highest number of platinum certifications (14), until the record was broken in 2011 with Adele's album 21 with 16 cerifications.

2. Sued

The band was sued for copying the Coca-Cola jingle “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)” in their song “Shakermaker” from their debut album Definitely Maybe in 1994. They were also sued by the Beatles parody band “the Rutles”, for copying their song “How Sweet to Be an Idiot” in their song “Whatever” also from their debut album.

3. Liam Quits

The band had to play at the start of their U.S. tour without their lead singer Liam because he didn't want to tour in 1996, but still performed very well with his brother Noel taking the role of the vocalist on most of the songs. Related, the band also performed on »MTV Unplugged« in 1996 without Liam, whom was watching the performance of the band, from the balcony drinking beer and heckling his brother Noel.

4. Cover Photo

The cover of the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was shot by British graphic designer Brian Cannon in the Soho's Berwick Street with Brian and DJ Sean Rowley walking down the street. And also, Brian got the job because Noel liked his rare Adidas shoes.

5. Band Name

The band was actually started by his five year younger brother Liam, but Noel was the one that actually got the band his name. He came up with it when we was a roadie for the British indie rock band Inspiral Carpets from Oldham, England. The brothers had the poster for their tour on the wall, in which one of the venues listed was the Oasis Leisure Centre.

6. Wonderwall Music

Their most famous song got the name from George Harrison's intrumental soundtrack »Wonderwall Music«, released in 1968. Songwritter of the song Noel, also stated that he compares every song he writes to the Beatles and believes that if he was born the same time as Lennon, he would have made the biggest band ever and not them.

7. Album Title Story

The name for their fourth studio album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants came from Noel when he was in a bar in England. He saw the quote on the side of a 2 pound coin. In his drunken state, he wrote the name on the side of a pack of cigarettes and the next day showed it to his bandmates, whom liked the name, so they kept it as the name of the record.
