The 27 Club

in #music6 years ago

Club 27 is an expression used to refer to a group of popular musicians who died at the age of 27 years. These are usually cases related to alcohol and drug abuse.

The original list includes blues musician Robert Johnson (considered the first member of the group), Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. To this list was added the case of Kurt Cobain, who strengthened the urban legend that the deaths of musicians at this age are unusually common. From this list other ones have been made that include artists of several musical genres or not so famous.

The momentum for the creation of the club was the deaths of Jones, Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison. Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994, was added later. With the exception of Janis Joplin, there is controversy regarding the other deaths of club members. According to the book Heavier Than Heaven, when Cobain died, his sister said that as a child he talked about wanting to be part of the 27 Club. On the fifteenth anniversary of Cobain's death, Robert Smith of National Public Radio said, "The death of these rock stars at the age of 27 has really changed the way they see rock music." The 27s: The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll details the story of the phenomenon.
