3 Top Heart-Wrenching Songs From ‘The 1975’. (Personally.)

1. Robbers.

Robbers is a song about an abusive relationship, with both sides being toxic for each other but at the same time not wanting the other to leave. They are depicted as ‘robbers’ as they rob each other of their happiness and chances in the world apart from one another.

As Matty said in an interview:

“‘Robbers’ was originally inspired by my love of the Quentin Tarantino film True Romance.”
“In the movie the couple run away to California after killing her pimp and stealing his drugs to start a new life financed by a once in a lifetime drug deal. It’s the sentiment behind the film that appeals to me, the hopelessly romantic notion that two people can meet and instantly fall in love, an escape story where love is the highest law and conquers all against the odds.”
“Characters like Bonnie and Clyde always appealed to me as a teenager – couples so intoxicated with one another that they fear nothing in the pursuit of the realization of each other, actions fueled by blind unconditional love.”
“‘Robbers’ is an ode to those relationships. The type of relationship all humans long for. All or nothing. This video is about when love makes two people feel they are the centre of the universe.”

2. Me.

According to here, the song switches between the perspectives of Matty and his father (the father having hurt Matty’s mother and brother before) and the song mainly revolves around guilt, but I like to think that the song is between Matty and someone else that he loves but he acts as if they don’t matter to him due to him being like a ticking time bomb himself.

After every sentence, Matty asks ‘don’t you mind’ to whoever that he’s dedicating this song to. I like to think personally that Matty asks this as more of an apology for doing whatever he does to said person. The end lyrics though, of him saying “I love you, don’t you mind, don’t you mind.’ makes me think of Matty telling the person not to mind him loving them instead of asking for an apology.

3. Nana.

In this song, Matty’s lyrics are raw and sad, as he sings about the death of his grandma over his acoustic guitar and the soft keys of his piano, reminiscing on their times together and imagining what he’d tell her if she walked into the room. It also shows that Matty was somewhat very close to her, and looks up to her as someone that he respects.

The last three lines are absolutely heartbreaking, as he sings ‘But I'm bereft you see, I think you can tell, I haven't been doing too well.” and his voice cracks in the end, showing his emotions clearly.
