  1. Jazz is a byproduct of multiple cultures intermingling; including European classical and folk music (and mainly European instruments), African folk music, Christian hymns and gospel songs, Caribbean folk music, Spanish influences, French and Arcadian influences, influences from indigenous Central American music, and so on.

  2. The artform is entirely predicated on diatonic tuning, which is a European update to ancient Greek musical concepts. Tonal music as we know it comes mainly from Western Europe.

  3. From the very beginning, white people made major contributions to jazz (eg. Bix Beiderbeck), and black musicians were overwhelmingly putting their own spin on music written by white people (or European Jewish people, who certainly weren't considered "white" at the time). So it's incredibly silly to say that any one group "owns" Jazz, and everyone else is a tourist.

  4. Yes, many of the greats and the most influential early influencers were black. If you're interested in music, you must a absolutely study the best of the best... Thus, you will study, and hopefully learn from and become influenced by many of the numerous incredible black jazz musicians of the last 100 years. You will have absolutely no choice other than to mimic some of their ideas... Fortunately, that's perfectly normal and how everyone learns to find their own voice as an artist. There is nothing wrong with that and never will be. Do not apologize for pulling ideas from any source. All it proves is that you are open to great music no matter what skin color the original performer happened to have... That makes you a normal, non-racist, perfectly sane person.

  5. If you dig into jazz history and aren't racist or just a jerk, you will most likely end up being able to list all your strongest influences by name. Honor them by naming them and introducing everyone you know to the music you love. That will be far more helpful to jazz as an art form and to those who still perform it than the dumb gatekeeping nonsense some people wield about jazz.

  6. No one owns culture. No one owns music. Jazz is for everyone.
