Have you tried Reaper and Renoise?
Renoise is fun for experimentation and super cool (and cheap)

thanks so much @angusg - your comments always make my day!! I haven't personally used Reaper or Renoise, though my husband has tried Reaper I believe. I'll have to check out Renoise as I haven't actually heard of that before - thanks for the link!
