Heavy Metal Suggestions for this Winter - Wintersun - About Winter, Stars and Sorrow

in #music8 years ago (edited)

In preparation for the emerging winter, I decided to share with you bands that perfectly fit with gloomy atmosphere of cold winter days and white landscapes. Melancholic, ambient, atmospheric and epic sounds and riffs, and bands mostly from Scandinavian countries that are capturing this feelings perfectly.

These are great for multiple occasions like

  • Taking a walk through the snow covered woods (wearing a blanket over your shoulders like an aging king, watching over your kingdom)
  • Riding on an empty subway while passing by the beautiful white landscapes, or driving late at night trying to forget what's bothering you
  • Being curled up in a comfy chair covered in blankets, drinking hot chocolate beside the crackling fire
  • Reading epic fantasy book like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones
  • Writing a new story for your Steemit blog

Wintersun

Wintersun is a Finnish band formed by mastermind and multi-instrumentalist Jari Mäenpää. Jari started his professional breakthrough in another band from Finland called Ensiferum as a guitarist and main vocalist. Not being satisfied with the mainly folk/viking/melodic death metal direction band was going in, he decided to part ways with them and focus solely on his side project.

He recorded entire first self-titled album in 2004. by himself with help of Kai Hahto on the drums. Unfortunately for the fans, they had to wait 6 whole years for the second album to see light of day, partly because band's lack of funds and partly because of Jari's over-the-top perfectionism. By that time Teemu and Jukka joined on guitar and bass making it a full functional band.

Both albums received amazing reviews with only complaint about second one being too short giving the time that passed in between. Wintersun combines lots of various influences like Scandinavian folk harmonies, mix of fast and slow tempos, melodic, technical riffs, both harsh and clean vocals. Lyrics about winter, space and time, sadness and other things that occupy Jari's mind showing his incredible talent and unique feeling for creating emotional and melancholic melodies.

Right now, we're in another long await of upcoming third album. Jari's done a lot of teasing recently, but when we'll here something new from this band only time will tell.

Until then, here is couple of suggestions to check out

I ́m wondering now where will you take me
From the horizon the light comes alive
Into the mountains high we set our way
Will we find our way in this long winter night
I see the land of fading sun and rising mountains
And I finally feel that I ́ve found my home
But oh, how it feels so cold when my dreams wither in fragments of time
Revealing that this land will die

So put on your overcoat and go into the foggy night, watch the dance of falling snow, put the headphones with Wintersun playing and drift into the dark...

Until next time \m/

It's a very timely article, because Jari's birthday is tomorrow.

I was not aware of that! Who knows, maybe he'll share some great news tomorrow. :) Thanks for sharing!

BTW, have you ever heard Heol Telwen? It's a French folk metal band, a great "power charger" for me as well.

Just now listened one of their songs and they sound pretty good. Thanks for sharing, I'll definitely check them out. :) I like Alcest a lot when it comes to French bands. They are different genre, but I'm sure you've heard of them.

Celtic Frost, old timey favorite.

Didn't have a chance to listen to them more closely, but will do so. Thanks for sharing!
