Reggae music does have a long history. reggae is not only a slow-moving type of music with heavy vocals, but is also closely related to the beliefs, identities, and symbols of resistance to oppression.
The year 1968 is widely referred to as the birth year of reggae music. Actually there is no special occurrence that marks the beginning of its origins, except the transition of Jamaican musical taste from Ska and Rocsteady to the slower pace of new music. Perhaps, the transition occurred because the frenetic and fast tempos of Ska and Rocksteady were less suited to the stressful social and economic conditions in Jamaica.
The word "reggae" is allegedly derived from the pronunciation in African accent from the word "ragged" (kagok-like motion of the body of a person dancing to the accompaniment of ska or reggae music). The rhythm of reggae music itself is influenced by elements of R & B music born in New Orleans, soul, rock, rhythmic Afro-Caribean (Calypso, Merengue, Rhumba), and Jamaican folk music called Mento rich with African rhythms.
Reggae music itself was originally born from the street Getho (village of the Rastafarians) in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. That is why the dreadlocks style adorning the early reggae musicians and reggae lyrics are loaded with Rastafari teachings of freedom, peace and natural beauty and bohemian lifestyle.
The entry of reggae as one of the elements of world music that also affects many other world musicians, and make the flow of this one music into the world's public consumption goods. Dreadlock or dreadlock hair style and lyrics 'Rasta' in the song was a public consumption. In other words, dreadlock and Rasta teachings have become pop productions, becoming pop culture, as the development of reggae music as a pop music..
