From the Red Crabs on Christmas Island, “Help us Paul Stamets! You’re our only hope!”
It so happens that earlier today I watched a presentation by Paul Stamets the mushroom biologist. Amongst the many amazing things he has done with mushrooms, Stamets has successfully exterminated and/or controlled ant populations with fungi. The presentation is exciting and I am left with new hope for the many possible ways mushrooms can heal the planet.
This evening I am watching a Planet Earth II episode (S1:Ep1). It’s an episode on island life. As it turns out, there is a serious problem on Christmas Island. You see, there is an ant species that humans are responsible for bringing to this remote island. The ant has completely overrun the island and is killing the much beloved Red Crab. The ant is called the Yellow Crazy Ant and it spits acid into the eyes of the crab. The crabs are blinded and die. They die because the can’t see where to go. It must be a horrible death!

This is a cry for help! Would someone – some hero, somewhere, bring the right mycelium to Christmas Island? The Yellow Crazy Ant must be stopped!
