Mushroom Monday -
Here's a few mushrooms from the archives for this #mushroommonday by @balticbager. The mushrooms above are maze polypore and made for a good makeshift tree face chomping on an acorn.
Here's some birdsnest fungi. They start out as little orange bumps then the soft top dries out and reveals little eggs in a harder shelled nest. When a raindrop falls into the nest the eggs are flung out to help spread the fungi around. I usually find this growing on mulch bark bits but you can also find it on dark soil.
Here's a beefsteak polypore aka Fistulina hepatica its also known as ox tongue. This one is too old to harvest and is tough as wood. They are also very rare. Technically they are edible but you have to get them at just the right time when they are soft. When you cut them open they look like raw beef and bleed red hence the name beefsteak mushroom. The taste is said to be tangy and tart sort of like raw rhubarb. Another thing to note is that these can contain trace amounts of a toxin called hydrazine that can cause cancer in large amounts. So I doubt I'll ever try eating one of these.
Here's a giant bitter bolete aka Tylopilus felleus. This one was about the size of a volleyball. These are technically edible but very bitter. I once took a taste test nibble and it was the most bitter thing I ever tasted. Some people pickle them for use with cocktails.
Here's another shot of the bitter bolete. The cap is kind of beige and pinkish. Happy #mushroommonday
