Mushroom Monday - 2019 Finds
Here's a review of my better mushroom finds in 2019 for this #mushroommonday by @balticbadger
Spring brought out some nice blonde morel mushrooms. I made a nice pasta dish out of these guys.
I also found a few half free morels, but these are so brittle that they disintegrate after cooking them. So I typically leave tgese ones be.
I also found a huge false morel that has poison in it. Some people eat these but they have a toxin that is carcinogenic and builds up over time if you eat too many.
Another false morel, the brainy top is separated from the base of the stem. This guy has toxins in it too.
I found my first winter mushrooms aka enokitake last spring. These are also called velvet foots.
2019 was a good year for the turkeytail as well. I found many colors this year. Above is the standard brown color.
Here's a more colorful batch of turkeytail.
Spring and fall was plentiful for dryad's saddle.
I battered and fried a few batches.
I found an edible bolete with a cracked top. Common name is cracked bolete and it was very tasty.
I also some edible cortinarius mushrooms this year. They have a firm texture with a deep mushroom taste similar to button mushrooms but more rich.
In summer I found this awesome green russula. This one is edible as well and was about the size of a donut.
The latin name is Russula virescens and these are one of the few mushrooms that can be eaten raw.
Summer was good for chantrelles.
A little toad hitched a ride in my mushroom basket full of chantrelles and oysters.
Fall brought a nice range of mushrooms including my favorite, chicken of the woods. I made buffalo wings out of them.
I also found lobster mushrooms in Wisconsin this year.
Not too edible looking but these are one of the best edible mushrooms out there.
Lots of scarlet elf caps were out this fall, these are edible but have no taste. They are mostly good for decoration.
I found a nice bear tooth fungi on a camping trip.
The bear tooth mushroom cooked well with ham and eggs at the campground.
2019 was a good year for puffball mushrooms.
Gotta take time to play with your food lol.
This polypore artist conch wasn't too impressed with my mushroom hunting :-(
Fall also brought me this batch of hen of the woods. This one tastes like chicken. You can buy it in stores under the name mayataki.
The stinkhorns were nasty as ever in 2019 lol.
I discovered a few new plots of wood ear. They grow every spring and fall and are easy to go back and harvest from the same spot each year.
I harvested pounds and pounds of pear shaped puffballs.
They are really good if cleaned properly. Soft with a slightly smokey taste.
Some blue turkeytail found around late fall.
Strange chocolate tube slime mold. Quite the hairstyle.
In winter in Seattle I found some deadly galerina honey mushrooms.
Some squishy wolf's milk slime mold. They pop like a zit if you squeeze them.
I also found my first amanita muscaria in Michigan, this one is just a baby.
Now in the winter I have to grow my own mushrooms. These are golden oysters.
I'm also growing lion's mane. That's it for a fungi filled 2019 happy #mushroommonday

Had Chantrelles before, love the taste and I know they grow in the Interior of BC too but I can't remember where the prime picking spots were. I get bit crazy by the bugs from the Knee deep moss looking for these Chantrelles. So much easier getting them at my Store.
Yeah have spray deet to avoid the ticks and mosquitos. Chantrelles are one of my favs. I bet you could find lots of good edibles in bc. I hear lobster mushrooms are plentiful up there.

Yeah, Deet is know to cause Cancer in Lab Animals, so don't apply Deet to your Lab Animals.
Lol yeah i just spray it on my shoes to deter the ticks. Then i have a citrinella heater thing on my belt to repel mosquitos. Only in the worst part of the year (late summer) i actually spray deet on my skin, then i rush home and wash it off. Maybe the damage is done by then... better than west nile or lymes disease...

And why not they are always interesting to look at i don't know how you find all these alien mushrooms...lol 🤣
I bet the jungles of Asia have some trippy ones.
I am sure they do i once when up the mountains with some village ladies and they certainly got a few buckets full of mushrooms that were all eatable.
Wow for me that sounds like a vacation destination :-)
It is like a vacation to me my girlfriend has lots of rice property out in the country side and i love visiting there and climbing the mountains.
