Childrens Exhibits at the Charleston MuseumsteemCreated with Sketch.

If you ever find yourself in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, please do not miss the main museum. The Kidstory section of the Charleston Museum tells the tale of the city's past, much as the larger adult section does. In fact, the entire museum is excellent. But I want to show you these children's exhibits. I found them quite educational also.

This is an interactive home; children can step inside and see additional exhibits of items that would be found in a typical home.

There is a mock-up of the port back when ships were used more frequently.

This is a rubbing station where some historical items are outlined and can be copied by children by rubbing crayons on a page of paper.

And these next three photographs show old toys and games that may have been popular among children of an earlier era.

This exhibit has some recordings of animal calls. Children can guess and then see which animal makes each noise.

Here is a compendium of knots from the port exhibit. There also is a story that goes along with this exhibit of a young slave who worked in the port, so children can be exposed to the issues he may have faced. Given Charleston's background with slavery, the economic lifeblood of this region during colonial times and into the Civil War, I like how the museums address this history with some honesty.
