When the Ford Motor Company was ready to present their new sports car in 1955, they were looking for an illustrious name for the car.
A look at the mythology of the Native Americans brought the solution. There, the "Thunderbird" is described as the angry herald of the gods that makes the thunder roar by the powerful stoke of its wings. In its first year, Ford sold 16,155 Thunderbirds whereas Chevrolet sold only 674 Corvettes. With the Thunderbird, Ford specifically addressed the demands of customers who valued a sporty design but did not want to forego luxury.
