Texas governor vows to address school safety and gun violence

Tex Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz addressed the media on Friday afternoon.

Abbott called the shooting "one of the most heinous attacks" in Texas school history, and announced plans for an upcoming roundtable discussion on preventing similar tragedies.

"The answers are not always immediate," Abbott said. "But the answers will come."

"In the public policy arena, we need to be doing everything humanly possible to stop this from ever happening again," Cruz said.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said lawmakers and school officials need to "think out of the box" when it comes to school safety.

"We're going to need to be creative," Patrick said. "Maybe we need to look at limiting the entrances and exits into our schools so that we can have law enforcement looking at the people that come in."

Schools may also have to alter start times "so that not all students show up at once," he added.
