Methodology:!

In order to prepare the paper both Primary as well as the Secondary data is used. Primary data have been collected by field study some sumanis of Amguri.(Sivasagar district). I have visit Different govt. and non govt. Office in order to collect some data about Muga culture.. Secondary data includes different published Reports of the CentralSilk Board, Government of India, Directorate of Sericulture; Government of Assam from internet etc. have been used.

North East India is considered as the original home of muga culture . Actually, there is a muga silk industry in the north Eastern part of India as the climate of the region suits its growth and development.The Muga culture of Assam has been in existence since time immemorial. In Assam , Muga silk weaving is an ancient craft, though there is no define and precise mention of the time of its origin. Due to lack of definite and authentic contemporary historical accounts, different scholars have drawn different opinions.Though we may considered the Ahom region as the starting point of Muga Cultutre of Assam which prospred and thrived and had become a part of life of Assam and assamese people. It is a traditional culture inherited from generation to generation .

Muga Culture

Among the three varieties of silk (Eri, Muga and Pat), production of Muga Silk is Exclusive prerogative of Assam and is considered as most valuable.The most Important muga cocoon rearing villages lie in Sivasagar, Jorhat ,Golaghat, Dibrugarh,Tinisukia,Kokrajhar,Udalguri Dhemaji,and Lakhimpur districts.It is mainly grown in chiefly by the Ahom community.It is also said that Mariani (In Jorhat District) was once the chief muga cocoon growing area, specially for Chapa or Pan Chapa as well as Mejankari or Adakuri varities of Muga Silk .The Textile items made out of muga silk are – Riha, Mekhela,Chadar, Saree, Dhoti, Dress Material etc.
