It's a wrap! A behind-the-scenes recap of the first episode of 'eSTEEMed broccoli' on MSPWaves Radio

in #mspwaves7 years ago (edited)

Yesterday was the premiere of the eSTEEMed broccoli show hosted by @jimitations on MSPWaves Radio. We wanted to give you a brief, behind-the-scenes report on how the first show went and what you can expect in the future.

Getting up and running for this radio show has been a challenge! Jimmie's been doing radio for years, but he's not familiar with the technical side of things, so @geke has been helping him in that area. Truth be known, she's not familiar with the technical side of audio production either, so... it's been a challenge. The MSPWaves Studio Manager @r0nd0n helped us through the whole process of setting up OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) and changing the midi settings on the computer and integrating all this with iShowU audio capture. It took well over three hours, total, for @r0nd0n to walk us through this.

It was a really busy, chaotic day yesterday for the studio staff at MSPWaves and as our showtime approached, none of the staff were available to sound check us or give us the hand off. We had a few strategic things going for us, though. There was no show playing prior to Jimmie's. And all the software we'd been tinkering with the day before was still open, right where we'd left it. Surely the sound levels were at least passable?

So @geke looked at @jimitations and asked, "Should I just click the 'Start Streaming' button and see what happens?"

"Do it!"

We checked in with the MSPWaves audience chat (thanks to @gmuxx, @naquoya, and @rhondak) to make sure people could hear us, and the show was underway! Two hilarious hours with great stories of Jimmie's encounters with some of the actors he voices, his time at Disney, and even our jobs in the entertainment department at Universal Studios. The bad news is, we didn't manage to record the show. We did set up recording settings the day prior, but these settings only worked for our Test Stream profile, and when we went live to the MSPWaves feed, we had different settings selected. These were finalizations we simply hadn't had time to make (and didn't know to make) prior to the first show. But they've now been made, so all future shows will be recorded. And expect to hear those stories again, in order to get them on tape, so to speak. Jimmie will be peppering them throughout future shows.

We played lots of Starship Winkler clips, one of Jimmie's favorite projects, as well as some Colorado tourism parody bits. We heard from the audience that these clips were on lower volume, but @r0nd0n helped us even out our volume levels right after the show, so we're set on that moving forward. Jimmie got a few impression requests, with Christopher Walken being the best (thanks @crimsonclad) and Alex Jones being the worst (Jimmie wasn't familiar with Alex Jones, to his credit). We hope the audience can give him lots more impression requests via the audience chat for future shows!

Jimmie also mentioned a few Steemit PSAs, including information about our Beetlejuice story writing contest (deadline is August 25th!) and our new project over at @commentwealth. After the show, we decided that it might be helpful for @geke to jump in with this business-type items. That'll give Jimmie a bit of a break to gather his thoughts, find his next clips, and take those much-needed sips of water. Now, instead of hearing us occasionally whisper to each other, you'll hear all our coordination out loud. What the hell... we have no secrets. So although @geke has been insisting for days that she isn't going to be part of the show, it looks like she will be, in some small part. So much for that introversion.

At this point, we've gotta profusely thank @r0nd0n one more time! We'd also like to thank others who have made the whole radio broadcasting thing possible over at MSPWaves, including @sircork, @crazybgadventure, and @ma1neevent. And special thanks to @uniwhisp for giving us a presence on the MSPWaves website and making all those changes for us.

So we hope you'll tune in next week! The show airs Wednesdays at 4:00 PM UTC (Noon Eastern). And head over to MSPWaves.com to listen to all the great shows MSP is putting on the air!

Great show despite the minor technical problems. I could listen to @jimitations for hours.

Thanks Muxxy! We'll get with you later today to coordinate some of the pre-records.
